PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES
It is expected that students will:
• analyse reasons for the initial exploration and settlement of North America
RESOURCES
- Interactive site: Where is Vinland? ( Great Unsolved Mysteries of Canadian History series) There are many mysteries to solve here, and “Where was Vinland?” is just the start. What drove the Vikings to far-away countries? Why did they come to North America? Once here, why did they not stay? What impact did they have? And, why does legendary Vinland continue to have such a strong hold on our imagination?
SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
• Have students compare the exploration mandate
given to Captain James Cook with that of the charter
of the Starship Enterprise, focussing on reasons for
exploration. Ask students to develop their own
exploration charters. (lesson plan)
SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
• When students discuss the reasons for Captain James Cook’s explorations, check that they have included the following:
- advantages of an all-water route to Asia
- desire for wealth
- expansion of Christian faith
- sense of adventure, curiosity about the unknown
