The goal of this assignment is twofold.
1) To research your chosen controversial food or product; evaluate the pros and cons of the issue, and develop an opinion as to which side is more valid.
YOU MUST TAKE A STAND.
2) To create a PowerPoint (or website if you prefer) to teach what you have learned to your classmates. Your PowerPoint will have a minimum of 8 slides:
Slide 1: Introduction--Include a definition of your food or food product
Slide 2: Describe the current controversy in point form, including both sides of the issue
Slides 3-8: These slides will examine websites and web-based articles to research about the controversy. For each site/article, you will need to do the following:
- Brief text (your comments and site quotes to support your comments). Make sure you consider your sources for bias (fact or opinion?). Questions to consider: why did your source create these articles? Is the site selling the product for profit? Is the site trying to sway your opinion (sell you an idea)?
- Whether the site is PRO or CON
- A link to the site (which will work when your assignment is posted on the Food Studies 11 site).
- Graphics (where appropriate)
Links to some of these sites are found on the right side of this page: Government sites, commercial or industry sites, EBSCO searches, Consumer organisations, and Educational institutions. These are just a starting point. Please use various search engines to find more information and websites. Remember, the goal of this assignment is for you to become effective at determining which sites are and aren't credible.
3) With your last slide, you must make a decision. Based on the research that you have done, what do you believe and why?
