This semester during silent reading, you are to compile a list of 50 challenging words for which you do not know the meanings. These words should be selected from your silent reading novels.
Your assignment will be marked on the following criteria:
a) Words must be numbered from 1-50 with the title(s) of the novel and the page numbers from which you take the words.
b) Words must be worthy of including in your vocabulary - ones that you can use in your speaking and writing in the future (rather than words which are archaic).
c) Include the direct quote from the novel in which the word occurs. (One or more sentences to help the reader understand the context). Underline or highlight the word you have selected.
d) You must provide a dictionary definition and pronunciation for each word. Use the Gage Canadian Dictionary in class, or link to Merriam-Webster Online where you can cut-and-paste the information and listen to the pronunciation as well.
e) You must prove you know how to use 20 of the newly learned words by creating a sentence using the word in a Charles Best context. For an example, click to MODEL. As well, your newly created sentence must provide a context clue for the meaning of the word.
f) You will be tested orally in class on the 20 words you have selected, being asked to provide meanings, pronunciations, and new contexts.
