Because there are so many wildlife species in BC, E-Fauna BC is a work-in-progress. The Encyclopedia of Life is a free, online collaborative encyclopedia intended to document all of the 1.9 million living species known to science. It is compiled from existing databases and from contributions by experts and non-experts throughout the world. It aims to build one "infinitely expandable" page for each species, including video, sound, images, graphics, as well as text. In addition, the Encyclopedia will incorporate the Biodiversity Heritage Library, which will contain the digitized print collections from the world's major natural history libraries.

E-Flora BC is a GIS-based biogeographic atlas of the vascular plants, fungi, algae, bryophytes and lichens of British Columbia that now includes more than 8,000 individual atlas pages. Wolfram|Alpha is an answer engine developed by Wolfram Research. It answers factual queries directly by computing the answer from structured data, rather than providing a list of documents or web pages that might contain the answer as a search engine would.

Users submit queries and computation . Wolfram Alpha then computes and provides answers and relevant visualizations from a core knowledge base of curated, structured data. Wolfram Alpha thus differs from semantic search engines, which index a large number of answers and then try to match the question to one.

The most wide-ranging and scholarly resource on Canadian music. Available in both English and French.

NThe Fugues of the Well-Tempered Clavier provides interactive multimedia analyses of Book I (and portions of Book II) of the WTC by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The Well-Tempered Clavier,  is one of the world's great intellectual treasures. Each of its two volumes contains a prelude and fugue in every major and minor key of the chromatic scale.  Book I, which was completed in 1722, was the first cycle of compositions in this conception. Book I begins with a prelude in C Major, followed by a fugue in the same key. These are followed by a prelude and fugue in C minor, C#/Db major/minor, D major/minor, etc. Each pair moves up the chromatic scale until every key has been represented. In Book II, which was completed in 1744, Bach effects another complete transversal of the chromatic cycle. One of Bach's primary purposes in composing these cycles was to demonstrate the feasibility of the "well tempered" tuning system that would allow for composition in every key.

MecMovies is an extensive collection of examples, theory, and games designed to complement a  Mechanics of Materials course. The software features graphics and animation to visually communicate course concepts to students. Special emphasis is placed on developing the learner’s understanding and proficiency in basic concepts and skills through interactive exercises and games.

 

Z To help students visually comprehend concepts, PhET Interactive Science Simulations  animate what is invisible to the eye through the use of graphics and intuitive controls such as click-and-drag manipulation, sliders and radio buttons. In order to further encourage quantitative exploration, the simulations also offer measurement instruments including rulers, stop-watches, voltmeters and thermometers. As the user manipulates these interactive tools, responses are immediately animated thus effectively illustrating cause-and-effect relationships as well as multiple linked representations (motion of the objects, graphs, number readouts, etc.)

ABLOSSOMS stands for Blended Learning Science or Math Studies. It is a project sponsored by MIT LINC (Learning International Networks Consortium) a consortium of educators from around the world whose vision is to begin to develop a large, free repository of video modules created by gifted volunteer teachers from around the world, seeded initially by MIT faculty members and by partnering educators in Jordan and Pakistan. Each module will be designed pedagogically to run in harmony with the regular in-class teacher, the subject matter covering a specific area of mathematics or of a physical science. Each module will build on prerequisite material studied, but will present a math or science concept in a mind-expanding and exciting form. The goal is to develop deeper and richer skills in the students and to enhance their critical-thinking skills.

Canadian Points of View Reference Centre™ is a full-text database designed to provide students with a series of essays that present multiple sides of a current issue. The database provides information on 120 key topics of interest to Canadian researchers, each with an overview (objective background/description), point (argument), counterpoint (opposing argument), and Critical Thinking Guide. Topics covered include: environment, health, human rights, crime, race, technology, substance abuse, and many more.

Canadian Points of View Reference Centre contains a balance of materials from all viewpoints, including 480 main essays, leading political magazines, newspapers, radio & TV news transcripts, primary source documents, reference books and a series of titles from World Public Opinion. The database also offers guides to debate, developing arguments and writing position papers. What about Wikipedia, anyway?

We started out loving Wikipedia; then a bunch of vandals started fiddling with it; and a lot of teachers started telling their students that they could not use it in their assignments.

This is what we think, as of September 2011.

Wikipedia is a fine resource, but it is like any encyclopedia - it is a beginning, a starting spot, a jumping off place.

There is a standard process for aquiring information when a person know little or nothing on a subject. Start  small and grow with bigger resources and growing knowledge.

1. Start with a dictionary, thesaurus, or glossary - Define terms

2. Consult an encyclopedia, or reputable site - anything that gives you information in a few paragraphs, rather than pages.

3. Identify keywords and then - roam free.

Interpreting Ceramics is an initiative of a group of academic staff in the UK who have joined together under the title of Interpreting Ceramics: Research Collaboration (ICRC). Our collaboration has come about through shared research interests in recording, interrogating, interpreting and communicating the practice and history of ceramics.

The members of ICRC are committed to exploring ways in which collaborative effort, on both a national and international level, can lead to broader and more interdisciplinary research into all those categories of human activity which are indicated by the term 'ceramics'. ICRC has an interest in any practice or mode of inquiry which brings a social and cultural awareness to bear on the manufacture and consumption of objects made from ceramic materials. The fields covered would therefore include studio, industrial, architectural, traditional, sculptural and figurative ceramics as well as the relevant branches of anthropology, archaeology, material culture studies, museum studies, archiving etc.
