In the area of computers, the saying that “keeping an open mind allows for growth’ is especially applicable. Computers are dynamic in nature, always changing and always being developed. Keeping an open mind is what has allowed the computer industry to surge in the past few years. Areas such as the Internet, hardware, and software all rely on open minds to allow for growth. Having an open mind allows for new innovations, new technologies, and new ideas to flourish. Without open-mindedness, the computer industry would have been unable to gain in the proportions it has today.
The internet is a prime example of open-mindedness creating growth. Originally designed as a military communications network, the Internet has progressed far since its conception. Although its original intent was to provide communication for the military as well as various educational institutions, open minded thinking has allowed the internet to find its way into millions of homes and businesses world wide. Open-minded thinking has also allowed the Internet and its various companies to expand effectively into the business market. While it was at one time believed that the Internet would serve as a purely educational medium, it is now apparent that it is also a flourishing business opportunity. So successful is the new “E business” trend, that at the recent Super Bowl, electronic commerce companies bought out a large portion of the advertising air time. The success of the Internet and its various businesses would be impossible without open-minded thinking.
In the hardware sector, open-mindedness is a key to survival. The recent explosion in the 3D video market is a prime example of this. A video card is a device that allows the images that a computer produces to be displayed upon the screen. While previously a mundane essential, an influx of 3D games such as Quake or other “first person shooters”, has created a booming market for the 3D video card. Open-minded thinking has allowed this development in the computer industry to flourish and become one of the main selling points of a new computer. However, the effects of close-minded thinking are equally apparent. Companies that refuse to accept new ideas and incorporate them have been as Fotsky stated, “swept into the dustbin of history.” Such companies include Amiga as well as Atari, once big players in the computer industry, they are now long forgotten. Computer hardware relies on open minded thinking for the development and it serves as a key to financial success.
Computer software is also dependent upon open minds for growth. The operating system, also known as an OS, is an essential piece of software that is subject to open minded growth. The past few years have been extremely kind to companies such as Microsoft. Their Windows operating system is quite a development in user-friendliness. The days of Unix and DOS are long gone. Along with them has disappeared the purely keyboard driven interface. This has only been possible through keeping an open mind. Keeping an open mind has allowed computers to become people-friendly devices through the development of user-friendly operating systems such as Microsoft Windows. In the future, keeping an open mind will allow for further growth in software and operating systems, as programs such as Linux and the open source community begin to develop.
In the area of computers, keeping an open mind is truly essential to growth. The internet, computer hardware and computer software all testify to this reality. At present, the computer industry is a far cry from the days of vacuum tubes and punch cards. Due to open-mindedness, computers have grown to become a household appliance. Computers are now a prevalent, if not essential, part of modern life. Continued growth in this industry is only possible thorough open-minded thinking..
