Participants: 10 LIS Lecturers from the Faculty of Adab, IAIN Ar-Raniry and 10 participants of the certificate program in teacher librarianship
Overview:
The purpose of this workshop is to provide workshop participants with:
1) a deeper understanding of the roles and importance of school libraries in the formal educational process and in life long learning,
2) a deeper understanding of the roles and responsibilities of teacher librarians (librarians who work in school libraries), and
3) an understanding of holistic approaches to building and developing integrated school library programs that involve collaborative and cooperative partnerships between teacher librarians and stakeholders in madrasah school communities.
Participants and facilitators will review the current curricula for school libraries and teacher librarianship at IAIN Ar-Raniry and the current state of school libraries and teacher librarianship in madrasah schools. Together we will further develop the IAIN Ar-Raniry curricula and develop an action plan in Bahasa Indonesia, with the knowledge and skills gained from this workshop. Our ultimate goal will be to develop an even stronger teacher librarianship/school libraries program, that best meets the educational and training needs of teacher librarians who are or who will be working in madrasah schools, and their educational partners.
Please note: The terms teacher librarian and teacher librarianship will be used in this workshop to denote the person who manages the school library and the school library program. These terms are preferred and encouraged by the facilitator due to the importance of the teaching role of librarians who work in school libraries and the use of these terms internationally.
The relationship of the term teacher librarian and teacher librarianship to other terms such as school librarian and school library media teacher will be discussed with workshop participants. Some International standards such as those of (IFLA, 1995), use the terms “school librarian” and “school librarianship”. Others use “teacher librarian” and “teacher librarianship” such as the Canadian Association of School Libraries (CASL/CSLA/ATLC 1997). Still others such as the American Association of School Libraries (ALA/AASL 2003) use the term “school library media teacher or specialist”. In sum, these terms are usually used to denote the person operating the library and the profession associated with the job. No what the term, the importance of the teaching role of the librarian is of utmost importance in school libraries.
