Family Studies 12
The Real World
If we could shrink the Earth’s population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios containing the same, it would look like this:
- There would be 57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 from the Western Hemisphere and 8 Africans.
- 51 would be female, 49 would be male
- 70 people would be non-white, 30 would be white
- 50% of the world’s wealth would be in the hands of 6 people and all would be citizens of the United States
- 80 would live in substandard housing.
- 70 would be unable to read.
- 50 would suffer from malnutrition.
- 1 would be near death and 1 would be near birth
- Only 1 would have a college education
In order for you to develop an appreciation of other cultures your job is to thoroughly research a culture from the perspective of the family unit. Reflect back to your knowledge about the functions of families and their basic needs.
The information gathered is to be organized under the headings below. This information will be shared with the class orally and the written component will include a list of all resources used during your research.
