Students will choose one controversial topic within the following resource areas:


1.    Energy 
2.    Forestry
3.    Fishing
4.    Mining
5.    Agriculture
6.    Waste disposal
7.    Water use

Collect at least SIX WELL-WRITTEN ARTICLES
You are expected to assess the various considerations involved in the management of your resource, including:

•    sustainability
•    availability
•    social/cultural consequences
•    economic consequences
•    political consequences

HOW TO TELL IF AN ARTICLE IS GOOD ENOUGH TO PUT IN YOUR SCRAPBOOK

You are expected to use articles written from a variety of stakeholders’ points of view. Collect clippings from print newspapers and magazines, online databases (EBSCO) and Internet sites. You must include at least one article from each of these stakeholders:

•    Industry source and / or Government
•    Nonprofit organization
•    Peer-reviewed source (professional or scientific community)
•    Journalistic source

Once you have collected your articles you will use the article analysis template that will be provided and will answer questions that pertain to each of your articles (each article must be analyzed with a template!!!!).download the article analysis sheet

After you have distilled through your articles and analyzed them, you will be responsible for synthesizing what you have learned by writing a well-informed argument  (in a 500 - word short essay) where you explain your stance on the issue.

GUIDELINES FOR FINAL SHORT ESSAY
You must include the following in your paragraph and will be marked accordingly.
•    What issue(s) is (are) addressed?
•    What is the main argument and/or conclusion?
•    What evidence is put forward to support the argument(s) and/or conclusion(s)?
•    What are the differing points of views related to the issue?
•    What side of the issue is not represented?
•    Why is it difficult to resolve this issue?
You will be marked on to what extent you:
•    Draw reasonable inferences
•    Correctly cite supporting evidence from the articles
•    Express an opinion that is compatible with your analysis sheets

CONTENTS AND FORMAT OF SCRAPBOOK
You must include the following:   

Cover Page:
Title: controversial issue you have researched
Your name, block, date

Contents Page:
List of all the article titles   

Articles: 6 or more

Article analysis sheets: (one per article) 

 Short Essay - 500 - word, well-written, argument taking a stand on the controversy

Works Cited page (Landmarks Citation Machine) MLA
