Social Studies 9 – England in the 17th Century
Photo (drawing, painting, document, etc) Essay Assignment
What is a photo essay?? - In a traditional history essay, you would answer a question with words describing an event and how that relates to the question posed. In a photo essay, you will show those events with photos. Since some photos may not always be 100% be clear in its point, you will also describe, in writing, how the photo relates to your answer to the question.
Your photo essay will attempt to answer the following 3 questions about 17th Century England:
- What was life like for the people of England?
- What were the causes, components, and consequences of the English Civil War?
- How have the events of 17th Century England contributed to the development of democracy?
*hint: go back to your notes and text book to find out the topics and key terms that pertain to these questions
Guidelines for your photo essay:
- Search the web for images that relate to the questions above and copy & paste them into Powerpoint
- For every image you find, you must credit the site you found it on (give the URL)

Give a description of the image and explain how it answers the questions listed above.
In an attempt to save on printing, you will hand in your assignment electronically with a USB drive.
*hint: Go beyond Google images, sometimes great images are on other sites but have title names that you didn't search (ie: photo1.jpg).
