Report to the Canadian Government on an African Nation
You have been hired by the Canadian Government to report on the status of one of the African countries that are listed as Low Human Development in the UN Human Development Index. The Canadian Government needs the information to help it decide on where its aid money should be distributed to. At the same time, to help the government understand the direness of aid in your chosen nation, you need to compare it to the situation in Canada.
ASSIGNMENT
Part 1: Demographics
1) Title Page – title of report, country name, image, authors, date (5)
2) Basic facts for African Nation- location (map), land size, climate, economy, government system, culture/history (10)
3) Population Data - Graphs and tables of your African country and Canada – show any/all of your calculations!! (15)
a. For the last 5 years: population size, birth rates, death rates, growth rates, natural increase, migration rates, doubling time, life expectancy, population density (map and legend)
b. For 2011: Population Pyramids, dependency ratio
4) Written Analysis – compare and contrast the population statistics and population pyramids of Canada and your country – include a discussion of where they lie on the Demographic Transition Model and what that tells us about the countries. Discuss the present situation and the direction the country is headed in with reference to your research. (15)
Part 1 = 40 marks
Part 2: Living Standards
1) Title page - Design a title page for this part of the project. It must clearly illustrate one or more of the key development issues facing your country. (5)
2) Level of Human Development – For Canada and your African country, include: (15 marks)
a. Status of women – education, literacy, equality, etc.
b. Status of children – infant mortality, disease, labour, etc.
c. Access to health services, disease issues, sanitation
d. Access to safe water and food security
3) Economic analysis - For both countries, include: main economies, GDP/GNI per capita, aid agencies involved, World Bank or International Monetary Fund involvement, World Trade Organization involvement (15)
4) Written Analysis – conclusion of the development level in your country compared to Canada. Make specific references to your research. (15)
Part 2 = 50 marks
Part 3: Conclusion
1) Written Action Plan (15)-
a. Explain how the African country is stuck in the poverty cycle (national or personal).
b. Outline a course of action to help raise the Human Development Index of the African country and explain why Canada devote more of its aid resources to this country.Reference the data in your research and explain how the poverty cycle can be reversed with your plan.
